There will always be an absolute (relative) handful of exceptions who achieve status but the airline doesn't make much money out of them. It's also total folly to base policy on that demographic, particularly when it alienates people that BA actually does make decent margins on.
I'd also doubt, if on a weekly commute, that fares are always going to be sub-£50 - there will be some times of year when they're much, much higher and the gross margin percentage will be enormous.
