boarding pass/check in

I have always checked in at home but waited to get to the airport to print my boarding passes. I assume AA gives the same option when checking in at home--do not need to print boarding pass. For the first time in 20 years I will have to pay for checking my one suitcase. Will that be collected at the airport or when I check in at home? I will be checking in at LSE and then DCA if that makes a difference. Again I am use to doing this on Delta so just wondering if there are any differences.
