This is not correct. The policy is midnight of the departure day, not the midnight before.

Cancellation request must be made by midnight of the day after the eTicket is purchased or midnight of the departure date of the first flight, whichever comes first.
So yes, you can get less than 24 hours, but if you booked at 2PM for a 4PM flight, you would in fact have until midnight, 10 hours post-departure, to risk-free cancel. I have done this before.
