It's easy,
don't spend the money on the preferred seat.
Just think about it - it's only a few hours on the plane, and there are fantastic places to go, things to explore, and food & drink to enjoy in Sydney. Save the few dollars you'd spend on a preferred seat, and you can have an extra nice dinner in Sydney. There are some great places to eat there, and the weather in March should be perfect.
So: save the money, just sit in a regular seat on the plane, and spend the flight thinking about Sydney. Here are some pictures from when I was last there, just to whet your appetite:
