I do agree that intra USA flights often approach or exceed 1p in value in avios. I flew LAX-HNL return for 25k avios and about $7 in taxes last year when cash prices on the route were about £350. And the (almost) free cancellation fee is great. I imagine US residents value avios higher because of this.
