The way it used to work was that non-Golds could only get X class seats. But Golds could use any V class seat on an award. So if the flight is showing V9 X0, a Gold will see 9 award seats and a non-Gold will see zero.

I don't know whether this is universally true at the moment, because it's been a while since I last did a comparison.
