Here's a thought and an interesting example of AA miles being worth more than HHonors points. Some may not know it but you can use your AA miles to book a hotel. Now granted the miles' value greatly diminishes when used in this manner, but in this case they're still more valuable than the HH points. For only 34,100 AA miles you can book one night at the Hilton Diagonal Mar Barcelona on August 24 and that includes breakfast buffet. Or you can use 40,000 HH points for the same room without breakfast (unless your gold or diamond). The AA miles are worth .0076 while they HH points are worth .0065 for this $260 Easy Cancellation room.
But you're also earning 2 or 3 HH points (depending on the card) per dollar spent vs 1 AA mile, so you'd still be better off withe the Hilton card if you are looking at the total cost per point/mile.
