Slightly OT, but MCS is often a terrible value compared with paying $30 for an exit row seat one row ahead of the MCS exit row. If you look at it that way, yes.
But if you want to use the free MCS upgrade as a stepping stone to an F upgrade, it saves you money.
Or, if you want a better seat that actually reclines, it's a good option.
Or, the booze is free and what's a better way to pass the time on a 5 hour flight than drinking?
Sometimes, you don't get stuck with a middle seat. If I got auto-upgraded to MCS and got stuck in a middle seat (and for some reason wasn't planning to move to F), I'd immediately call and get my old seat back. F*ck middle seats.
