I'm doing LHR-DOH-MEL next week and as it's a super long flight it would be great to get a nice seat...

I'm wondering though, if the only way to get an exit row seat is at airport check in, does this mean that I should avoid checking in online? I've got an OK seat reserved online and if exit rows aren't available I'd really like to sit there.

Also, if I check in at LHR do I also get first dibs on seats on the DOH-MEL leg? Or will those all be taken by people who actually check in at DOH?
