It depends. I have had occasions where what you describe works, and occasions when it doesn't. It depends on what the fare is between DUB and xxx in comparison to the fare between LHR and xxx. Sometimes it's negligible, and sometimes it's huge (if there's a sale from DUB but not from LHR, for example).
