Don't see EU261 come into play here.. of course, any airline that wants happy customers would/should rebook on the next possible flight, even if that means on foreign metal, but legally, there is not so much OP can do..
EU261 does apply here but
not in relation to compensation as the flight has been cancelled more than 14 days in advance. There is more to EU261 than financial compensation.
It does apply in terms of rerouting but the regulation is not specific as to whether it applies to moving someone to an alternative carrier.

OP it is your choice whether to travel a day earlier or later not the airlines (subject to seat availability) so if a day later is better call them back and see if they will move you to it.
