If you care about reducing CBP hassles, AC is probably the best way to go. I've never experienced too many hassles at YUL, but I was there the day after Canada Day so maybe that had an effect.
The only time I had a hassle to get into Canada was the day just after the shooting in Ottawa. That shooting happened when I was on board of the TATL flight and I happened to connect to Ottawa. Had to go through a lot of extra checks that day...
One thing I do like about some Canadian airports is that that there's a special line for people with connections at immigration, to speed things up (at least in YYZ and YUL I spotted it).
