Does Air NZ even have a standby system on domestic flights? Its not like in the US where you have a load of people waiting by the gate on standby who get called up, never seen that here.
I've seen plenty of people provide a boarding pass marked standby to the gate agent, some of which then get issued a boarding pass with a seat number. I've done it myself plus had my checked in bag get a yellow / black tag with the word "standby" on it, so it does exist for at least WLG/AKL flights.
