Thanks, shore9. Not much of a detour. I'm going to MEL and the only 1-stop route is through LAX on UA, which is way more expensive and appears to be a pretty inferior product. So whether I do YYC-YVR-AKL-MEL or YYC-YVR-SYD-MEL, it doesn't make much of a difference. And in fact, I had been thinking about trying to get in a couple of days in NZ on this trip, so if I do it as a stopover, that's actually more convenient than doing YYC-YVR-SYD-MEL and later doing MEL-AKL-MEL or something like that.
