Welcome to FT, scooterdog! First off, let me just say you would be a fool not to go for 1P if you're going to be that close. It will make all the difference to you in the future. LAX is a great city in which to depart from for mileage runs. You can almost always find a low fare to somewhere. I always prefer doing redeyes to someplace in the east and then turning right around the next morning. CMH has always been a consistently reliable place for low fares for me.
