You mention that you are flying to four different places on four different airlines because no one airline goes to all of them. With the present day alliances, it is not particularly difficult to find fares on the mileage earning alliance members that will be equal to or lower than your low fare probably to all of your four destinations. It requires some effort and a sense of being a detective to find them .

You're talking to me as if I had never booked air travel before. I KNOW about the alliances. I KNOW you have to be a detective to find low fares. That's what I've been doing for years. I've been reading FlyerTalk for years, though I mostly have been lurking. That's what I did in these particular cases. In every case but one I checked every airline website, plus several online agencies.

To be specific, here are the four trips:

SFO to EWR on UA for Thanksgiving: $250 round trip. No other airline matched this fare, for my dates of travel.

SFO to LEX on ATA for Christmas: $215. No other airline matched this fare, period.

OAK to BUR on WN for New Year's: $75. This is my most common route, and WN has a monopoly on it. Sure, I could go to SFO to fly UA, maybe at a similar price, but it would be out of my way. (This is the one for which I didn't check lots of websites; since WN is the only one that flies this route I only checked their website.)

SFO to CDG on NW for a week in February: $260. NW offered this fare for only a few hours, and nobody else matched them at all. NW was the cheapest by at least $150.
