Pods are almost the same. Biggest difference is that the NZ pods require one to get up to put them in 'bed' mode. They also have mattresses and duvets. If one sleeps on the flight its probably better, but it also means the seat does not recline as far back (for my tastes) but all in all pretty much on par.
The IFE system in the non-renovated planes is quite old and skips a lot. It really needs a refresh. Content is quite good, though. Just a pain to deal with.
Food and service are better (although I have not tried AC's new Int'l offerings yet...next week!)
I have stated on a few forums that AC should stop striving for the Asian carriers and target what NZ offers. The crew are top rate. Very professional and attentive, but still in a somewhat relaxed way. For me it hits the target.
If you get a refreshed plane (look on the seat map for PY/Y. If its 10 across Y and PE 2-4-2 then it should be a newer plane. YVR was supposed to be one of the first few routes).
I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
+1. While I flew PE (not J), the service, IFE and food were all above AC IMHO. Connecting in AKL and on the way back is also a breeze.
