GM status on MP is supposed to give same Day change option for a GM for $75, but the ticket for the flight must be booked on a UA ticket # (begins with 016) (Is there any option for him to have ticket changed to 016 stock at this point after he already bought the ticket? I have never personally run into this situation myself.)

sbm12 says upthread that SDC fee is waved if at a connecting airport enroute. I'm not sure if this applies to OP as he is booked on LH stock. Maybe someone who know for sure can chime in.
