SFO/LAX/SJC is a lot of connection time and IRROPS risk to save renting a car/taking a cab/Ubering. I live south of SJC, and find myself more and more just driving to SFO anyway because of the better flight schedule options (and mainline vs. RJ for domestic flights).

I would never take a connection via LAX when you have a reasonably close nonstop option at SFO. You won't save time. You will be very unhappy in the event of misconnect. You may not even save $$.
I've had good experiences on all my SFO-LHR nonstops. I've had crappy experiences every time I fly through LAX with CBP (and I have Global Entry) and the UA terminal is horrid.
Plus in the event of cancellation/misconnect you will prefer to be near home than stranded in LA.
Probably the worst idea I've seen all day!
