What's the AC process when J = 0 and Y = oversold?

So our resident cow suggested that there are cases when AC revenue management will zero out J when Y is oversold and he cited a flight from HKG? or somewhere where J = 0 and he snagged an eupgrade that cleared at the gate.

Same thing happened with me today. A fellow FTer had nominated me for an eup. It was all fare classes = 0. I'm sitting there going but sure enough, the GA calls up...3-4 people who clear at the gate! Me being one of them.

I'm curious if anyone knows how it works behind the scenes. Every flight YYZ to YQR today was flat out full. J/R = 0 across the board. and all economy fares = 0

I honestly thought that penguins would fly before I would clear my upgrade...but sure enough, superhappypenguin up front in J.
