I tip. Everywhere and more than that. Call me acting superior. I don't mind.
- Never had my car damaged or broken into. Found the guards helpful and often chatty (where you from....). Once with a hire car, I had scratched the side on a parking gate and it left about a 6 inch scratch and streak of the gate's paint color on the side of it. The "guard" told me he'd take care of it while I was gone and I said sure. 'Bout an hour later, I come back and I swear I thought he had replaced the flipping door. The scratch was barely noticeable (you had to look at it a certain way and in a certain light to see that it had been covered over - nailpolish? - what do I know) and the paint streak was gone. That guy got at least ZAR200-300 (save me from airport car hire return hassle o'plenty) and was ready to carry me and the car anywhere I wanted to go.
- When staying with friends or family, I always tip their household staff for helping out (I ask if this is OK with my hosts first). The staff appreciates it b/c they're making the effort. Often, I'm the only occupant of the house most of the day while my hosts are out and about. So, I'm throwing the staff's schedule and duties for a loop.
- In short, I tip.

I had a relative visit and I had told him tip ZAR 5 for something or other .... for each item. I want to say it was for helping with bags at a hotel or something. He gave the guy US$5 per item and reported to me later that the guy was very happy. Yip, you might say that. My relative could barely get this guy off him from offering help anytime he saw my relative.
