It's clearly been studied. But, the question is not whether a bunk-flat Y seat can be sold, but how many people would fly that instead of J. It makes zero sense to compete against your own product and only makes sense if you can lure travelers from other carriers.
And, it clearly needs to cost a good deal more as space is an immutable premium inside an aircraft. Much more than simply bolting a bunk bed into a frame. What about takeoff/landing/turbulence.
In an era when people question whether it's worth $149 for E+ on UA TPAC (basically extra leg room and nothing else), could you really sell Y-BUNK for $1,500 on that route?
I would like to see someone try. There is a big difference between 4 paper clips more worth of legroom and no gain in width versus a flat bed. Whether passengers would pay 3 times I don't know, but the sky couch idea is flexible.
