Istanbul is as safe as it gets for a gay traveller. In fact, you would be surprised at how many guys (wink wink) you can meet using certain phone apps. As it will be daytime clubs and bars are out of the question but sightseeing should be fine. Also, all subways / major bus routes have English announcements and signage.
