Concerning the claim of the OP's colleague, aside from all other considerations I would tend to think that this arrangement is a poor option for an efficient near-home office given the combined hassle of buying a ticket, getting to the airport, clearing immigration and security, and finally cancelling the ticket for each work session.
That's the story, although I had read it in one of the English language Chinese daily's.
