See this news item . Apparently, the goal of that man was to get a permanent free lunch and open bar, not to have an office away from home.

Concerning the claim of the OP's colleague, aside from all other considerations I would tend to think that this arrangement is a poor option for an efficient near-home office given the combined hassle of buying a ticket, getting to the airport, clearing immigration and security, and finally cancelling the ticket for each work session.
