I tried this new online check-in at Sofitel Miami last week. Two days before my stay, I received an email, did the check-in online and it was confirmed. However, I never received the advertised welcome SMS that I was supposed to get on the day of arrival with practical information such as transport services to the hotel. When I finally arrived at the hotel, room key wasn't ready and I needed to do the normal check-in procedures: show my passport and credit card even though I had given this information during the online check-in already. Didn't work, yet.
I had exactly the same experience last week at the Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam.
