Call me a fanboy all you want, but I've had similar experiences to the OP on other airlines and I'd defend them the same way. People keep complaining that Delta/other corporations are failing the customer, but I tend to believe that today's customer believes they are entitled to more than any company can ever live up to. We want everything now and for free.
