London Antigua Trip
This is not a proper trip report because I cannot yet upload pictures (can any other member help to give this technoduffer a clue?) However, here are a few thoughts on our recent trip on BA to Antigua.
Outbound on Jan 29th - this plane is ancient. Prehistoric. Why don't BA consign it to the scrap heap? We could almost see the elastoplast. Needless to say, IFEntertainment does not work. It is knackered and Computer says no. No point complaining as there is nothing that I want to watch. This is why I always take my kindle and iPad with me.
Thats the bad bit however. Crew were helpful. However, 3 requests for a comment/feedback form gets me a 'yes of course' but no form. At this point I just give up and give in. The good news is that we have the front (Bulkhead) row in World Traveller+ and no one is sitting next to me in the (other) middle seat - yippee! A very good lunch is served (sorry, I took a picture but as I said ...) it was a chicken thing followed by one of the excellent Lily O'Briens chocolate fantasies. White wine was a very drinkable Sauvignon Blanc. This is followed later on by another good offering - afternoon tea - a sandwich and wrap - chicken and something else - both good. Then.... disappointment - another passenger is deposited in the (MY!) empty seat next to me - it seems that her IFE was not working either..... The man on the other side gives her a scowl (it seems its his seat too). But then - in no time at all it seems, we are there - in Antigua and 28C - yippee! After this, LIAT lost our luggage on the connecting flight, but thats another story.
Return Flight 16th Feb - A new plane! excitement. This is much nicer, especially as I have forked out for window/aisle seats. (Note - Our seats in the last row in WT+ are fine - no complaints at all.) There was a brief kerffuffle while a couple were (politely) evicted from the aisle seats near us that they had grabbed which turned out to belong to another couple. The latter were very polite given the time (and reluctance) shown by the interlopers to vacate. There were no crew around to help and I did rather admire the forbearance shown by the rightful owners, as the message not only seemed to take a while to sink in, but no apologies were forthcoming either. The femail counterpart simply sat there saying 'oh' and looking blank, as her husband tried to explain to her that she had to move, while the (rightful) seat owners stood for ages in the aisle, patiently waiting for something to happen. They were a lot more patient than I would have been.
That was the end of the entertainment however, as disappointment followed for us when the (new) IFE refused to do its stuff on either or our two screens. I noted that others a few seats away were having problems as well. Our very nice Lady Purser/CSD re-set them for us, but then... there was nothing we wanted to watch. Food - it was excellent but I can't remember what it was I'm afraid. I may be imagining it, but Lasagne may have featured somewhere. I know that I seem to be in the minority in praising BA food, but honestly, I always find it to be pretty good. Wine however, is a different story. Not so good this time round. We had no problem dozing on the 8 hour flight. However, Breakfast was as boring as expected - a dry croissant with jam. when we exited via the J cabin I was so glad I had not stumped up the extra. The flatbed seats were like tiny coffins. At 5'3" and average size I would have managed to squeeze in, but my OH would definitely have been in trouble. Perhaps an older plane is no bad thing after all. What on earth would have happened to the American we saw at the airport who was so vast that he had to be allowed to walk AROUND the scanner since he couldn't fit through it?
The moral of this story dear reader is - do not diss World Traveller+. It is often far better value than J if your flight is less than 10 hours - and it certainly was on this occasion. I was quite worried when J was fully booked - but in future I will be flying WT+ - at least to the Caribbean.
