For aircraft with personal device entertainment (content stored on on-board servers and streamed over wifi), if you want to watch secured content on a laptop, you'll need to install the plug-in, which you will be prompted to download when you open unitedwifi.com while connected to the plane's wifi network. You will need administrator rights to install the plug-in on a Windows laptop, and I don't have experience trying this on a Mac.
