But when you book on another airline months ahead of the flight, and then find that even as an Emerald you have no choice of seats and you must sit where you are told to sit, because the cabin has already had many seats pre-allocated by people who've booked before you (which has been my experience on QF), you begin to appreciate the benefits of BA's policy to higher-tier members.
