I've had to argue with T-Mobile stores (company stores not auth. dealters) when I lost a phone and needed a replacement to give me one rather than charge me $25. I played the "I've been a customer for 15 years" and it worked but I'm really chapped that they'd turn away a customer just so they could make a big profit off a SIM.
T-Mobile raising sim prices from $10 to $15 is exorbitant and bothers me, but it is still better than Verizon's practices. I couldn't get a sim from a Verizon corporate store without activating a line on contract, the store manager claimed sims are worth $500 each to him in inventory. AT&T gives sims away for free which makes way more sense to me. Why put up barriers to someone selecting the company's services by charging a huge amount for SIMs?
Just as an aside, I've tried to activate MVNO sims on T-Mobile, but no dice

Thankfully the porting promos don't necessarily require an actual T-Mobile number, some T-Mobile MVNOs also work.
Random rant: With the way T-Mobile is treating prepaid, they may lose me as a phone customer soon with their spotty coverage and equivalent (used to be lower) prices to competition.
