Unless I'm thinking of other airports(?), the screen shows a generic human outline. A little box will appear in places where the machine thinks it might be able to see something - i.e. it doesn't actually show any of your body on the screen at all.

I don't think privacy is therefore a valid argument for not using them (for not going through security at all yes, but not this specific machine).
