Although you technically have until 18 hours prior to departure to order a special meal, as per Air Canada.
I have found that it is best to place your order at least 22 hours before your flight. I have noticed a significant number of my flights missing the AVML when the order is placed between 18 - 20 hours before the fight. I'd call a few days before hand to have the special meal added to your PNR. When you check in on-line at T-24 you can verify that you special meal has been ordered, you should see something like this:

I have nothing to compare the MLL or Airplane J class food with- this will be my first time for both- but I do NOT have big expectations- I am a BIG FRUIT eater therefore I'm very picky about my fruit- so I'll likely go for the health option - I have an egg allergy so omelet is no go with me- I do NOT want to cause flight diversions due to a reaction! I do take something that aids me if anything is in contact with egg I eat so it's not like anaplactic shock or anything not like a nut allergy!
