When Lufthansa damaged my bag, they promptly ordered a replacement and I was up and running again within a week. United's process is unacceptably convoluted and delayed.
Have you asked UA whether they will cover the cost of a replacement at this point. The sensible thing would be to find the price for a new one on Amazon, Ebags or the like, call UA, give the specific price and get approval (and a PNR note). If UA won't approve, you have a decision to make.
