I have had this happen on occasion, maybe 4-5 times over the past few years. I have never had an issue with being accommodated, though as others have said you will need to be prepared to wait for a while for another seat. This is a lot riskier if you are at an outpost that is only served by one flight a day to a hub, so I would be more inclined to try it somewhere like SEA or LAS than DAB.
That being said, if you are not TOO late I think you'll probably be ok. I have been 4 hours late because I massively overslept and they still took pity on me and put me on the next flight with space. My only advice would be to check in online first so that if you don't like the answer that the ticketing agent gives you, at least you have a chance to try your luck with the gate agent. Assuming you're not an an outpost where it's the same person :-)
But, as others have said - be prepared to pay for a new ticket.
