The only time I have asked at the desk recently have been two occasions I made a last minute reservation the morning of my stay and I was accordingly just allocated a regular room instead on on the Executive Floor and it was a hotel that always upgrades me to the floor and when I mentioned it they found a room for me on that floor. That said, these upgrade threads have motivated me over the past month me to start leaving a nice note in the comment section if I want something in particular such as a nice view and my strike rate seemed to be a bit better based on limited situations where such matter (some hotels like HGIs don't really don't have upgradeable rooms) and while they were not suite upgrades they were definitely rooms upgrades to something I wanted so I was content.
