Officially, US doesn't have a policy to move to a later flight.

From personal experience, I was able to get on a later flight once. I was late getting to the airport after there was an accident on the freeway while driving there. Thankfully there were multiple flights between the 2 cities, and there was at least 1 seat on the next flight.
