I agree (and I'm ethnically Chinese). I went to Taipei a few months ago and thought it was a far superior 'Chinese experience.' It was cleaner, had better food and the people were much, much friendlier. This future trip to China (Shanghai) is unavoidable.
I'm probably going to follow this approach. I'll update with my experience (trip is in May).
I was in Shanghai for a week. I won't go through my circumstances, but it was business. All I found out was that everybody was there trying to screw me over. The entire system seemed to be based on screwing over everybody possible for personal gain.
