CC fraud from Apple Pay usage

I know I've read that Apple Pay is supposedly less susceptible to fraud due to the tokenization of credit card numbers, but I've just had fraud alerts on two different credit cards, and the only thing in common is using Apple Pay at the same vending machine.

Detail:
Today I got a fraud alert on my Capital One card. The interesting thing is I hardly EVER use this card; in fact, I only used it twice in the past 24 months, both times were in the past 8 weeks when I used Apple Pay to buy a soda from a vending machine at work.

This set the gears in my head turning: last week, I also got a fraud alert from Chase. This Chase is my go-to card with lots of transactions, so at first I thought the fraud could have occurred anywhere. But I just went back and searched my transactions, and there it was: Back in November, I used Apple Pay with my Chase Freedom card to buy a soda at the very same vending machine.

This is too strong to be a coincidence; this makes me strongly suspect a breach at the vending machine company.

Now, I know I'm not liable for any fraudulent transactions, etc, but I was surprised that ANY fraud had taken place since everything I had read said that Apple Pay (and tokenized transactions) were essentially fraud proof (ex: http://www.creditcardguide.com/credi...s-cards-fraud/)

What I now take that to be is: sure, the tokenized CC number won't work anywhere else, but crooks can still try to use it elsewhere, and if they do, you'll get a fraud alert and have to go through the hassle of having your credit cards reissued with a new number.
