I know many times we can be tempted by alternative routings but really in this case just get there fastest you can, less connections = less chances of hiccups and you don't have to deal with a domestic positioning flight.

If it was something new, a novelty or trying out something you normally don't have access too then sure.
I.E. I would fly from DEN or IAH to LAX to fly NZ to LHR. And my own personal one is that I am flying JFK-TPE-NRT and spending the extra time because I want to check out EVA Royal Laurel AND I get the Hello Kitty jet on the intra-Asia as well. ^
