Side note: The LAX KAL lounge wasn't even good for drinking, IMO. No champagne, one bottle of Ravenswood cabernet, one bottle of St Francis chardonnay ... and some whiskey. No other options. Nada, zip, zilch.

How does SFO compare in terms of offerings and amenities? In particular, how are the food options at the lounge? Buffet only or is there a la carte as well? Other info or details?

The short answer is that this is still a U.S. domestic lounge (albeit one of the nicer ones), so that should set your expectations accordingly. In other words, it's nothing like EK's DXB counterparts - so no spa, just 1 small shower room, etc.
The food is only buffet but had some really good options. Pretty standard alcohol selection as well from what I remember.
