The fee is a deterrent. Many flights do not have 5 pets in coach because of it. People twice about $150 each way, or $300 RT. For that, you can have a pet sitter.
Or you can arrange a letter stating you need an ESA. According to some people, it's possible to have one for about US$150. Half the fee for a RT, and the letter is usually good for one year.
