If the seat is available, CX still will ask you to get AA to reissue the ticket first before they can accept you. CX has no authority to reissue an AA award ticket. Even if you're at the airport and the flight is boarding, and there is availability. CX will not let you board until your ticket is reissued.
Has the CX policy changed in the last few years? I've successful done airport standby for an earlier, same-day flight on CX without going back to my ticketing carrier for a change - this was on an award ticket.
