This is not how airfares work (currently), and you can do controlled experiments to prove it.

The effect can absolutely happen, but it's happening because of price discrimination based on residency, not an individual searcher's frequent-flyer status.

If it's helpful to *think* of the effect as occurring for this reason, by all means try it out!
