When I called the United PremEx reservation number to inquire, well they actually just LAUGHED and said "good luck with that" and said if you want a better seat, probably try a different airline.!
A number of reward tickets show as "Flex" fares when you pull them up on ac.com (AirMiles comes to mind), but you generally don't get Flex fare benefits unless you actually book a revenue Flex fare.
If you do a new dummy booking for the same flights as you're on, you should be able to preview the available seats to see what preferred seats are still available.
