And, in fact, with infant carriers and rear-facing seats (ideally any child 2 and under should be rear-facing, even on planes), there would be no practical way for someone to get out if the seat was not next to the window.
Actually, I just went back and checked my child's flight memory page (love that site!) and it appears I was mistaken--the only time he was in middle seats was in a 3-across center section in business class. So, there was room to get around the seat, and, more importantly, we had aisle access.
That said, I do seem to recall reading here that the seat can block others in the same party. Perhaps
Eclipsepearl can correct me.
