Since I'm only in the UAE for a very short time and will not be leaving the airport, do I need to acquire any kind of temporary documentation?

I also looked at terminal 3's map and saw that it only has 8 gates. Where would I have to go if my connecting flight boards and departs away from the terminal?
You will not clear immigration or go through security; you'll stay on the gate side of the terminal so you do not need any documentation as you will not enter the UAE.

There are more than 8 gates. Just follow the signs from your arrival gate to the departure gate. You may have to walk through the central, hub part of the terminal where all the shops and restaurants are.

Like you've seen, AUH is not very big so it's very easy to navigate and the staff are top notch and willing to help and everyone speaks English. You won't have any issues.
