1) mostly is an added cost to hotels but shouldn't affect other elites much unless it allows use of DSUs on points and cash bookings.
2) will actually be useful to me once or twice if one isn't required to fly UA to use the lounge--when I fly UA, I still have lounge access through A3 *Gold.
