I am seriously considering the option that you have presented. Only problem is I have no idea where I will be in the fall, and so I am unsure if I would be able to complete the TPE run.

One option I found was the following: ORD-SJU-DFW-SFO. 5700 base miles. It priced out as $999 on AA.com but I called AA res and they have me a price of $771. I made a related post in the AA board about overbooking on these flights.
