Advice on SCL connection time

I booked a business class award for JFK-SCL-JFK on LAN using AA miles. I'm interested in purchasing a round-trip ticket to PUQ at either the beginning or end of my trip so I effectively have one connecting flight in SCL (e.g., JFK-SCL(connection)-PUQ-SCL-JFK or the opposite, JFK-SCL-PUQ-SCL(connection)-JFK). If I aim to do the connection in the beginning the only flight that works would give me 1:15 in SCL, but if I do the connection at the end I could book a 1:50 connection. Just a few questions:
-I realize that buying separate tickets I am responsible for a misconnect, but has anyone ever had LAN re-accomodate them on a later flight when another LAN flight was delayed? The tickets on the domestic Chile segments aren't that expensive so I'm not too concerned if I lose the value of the ticket but I'd be curious what's normally done here.
-Will I be able check a bag through to JFK-SCL-PUQ or PUQ-SCL-JFK with these connection times on two tickets or would I have to pick-up and re-check?
-The 1:50 connection time seems safer (meaning I do the PUQ trip at the end of my stay) since it's more time and presumably there is no immigration entry requirement. Am I missing anything here? Would 1:50 be OK domestic-to-international assuming the first flight is on time?
